A shocking figure indicates that more than 10,000 people were laid off from law firms in the year 2009 alone.Though the pace of lay offs in law firms is still slow, the number of people being laid off have increased hugely. In addition to this,it needs to be noticed that law firms have cut down the pay scales for their lawyers. Both the factors is attributed due to the global recession which has hit several companies.

The only relief seems to be the slow pace in which the layoffs have taken place. What needs to be observed that it took just till April to reach the 10000 figure which is more than the number of total people who were laid off in the year 2008.

The several companies which had laid off their employees include:

DLA Piper laid off 124 in UK Offices

Hunton & Williams laid off 23 Lawyers as well as 64 Staffers

Fish & Richardson managed to lay off 120 lawyers

Thompson & Knight cuts around 17 associates as well as 25 support staff lately.

Milbank laid off 89 of their employees which included 49 lawyers and 40 staff

Eckert Seamans plans to cut 119 of their temporary lawyers
